The Legend of Zelda
In 1986, popular video game publisher Nintendo released a game called The Legend of Zelda. Developed by Shigeru Miyamoto of Donkey Kong fame, it featured a boy named Link who was sent on an adventure to rescue Princess Zelda of Hyrule from an evil wizard named Ganon. Ganon, after stealing the Triforce of Power, was after the Triforce of Wisdom which was owned by Princess Zelda. Before he could take it, she shattered it into eight pieces and sent them across Hyrule into eight different labyrinths. You have to retrieve these eight pieces and put them back together so you can face Ganon in battle.

Zelda 2: Adventure of Link
In 1987, Nintendo released a sequel to the popular Legend of Zelda game. While the original LoZ was overhead, Zelda 2 was a sidescroller. Link was affected by gravity and could only move horizontally, with the exception of jumping and elevators. This game was also noted for it's greater difficulty, and for being much more RPG-influenced.
